Anakpawis demands immediate release of its paralegal
Manila, Philippines — “The police does not only disrespect the dead, they are also going after the people assisting for its proper turnover to the family and for a decent burial,” according to the militant Party-list Anakpawis today, calling for the immediate release of its paralegal Paolo Colabres who was illegally nabbed on past midnight of August 10 while keeping track on the remains of murdered Anakpawis Chairperson and peace consultant Randall “Randy” Echanis.
Colabres headed the team of paralegal and quick reaction force (QRF) who were securing the remains of Echanis after the police forcibly took it from the family’s custody and transferred it to a funeral parlor in La Loma, Quezon City.
He was illegally nabbed while conducting inquiry to the funeral parlor and was immediately brought to Camp Karingal, and has already underwent inquest for the obstruction of justice complaint filed by the police.
Anakpawis in a statement called it as “absurd, unjust, and a form of harassment” against people around Echanis.
“Charging our paralegal head with obstruction of justice is beyond police’s foolish act. They only exposed themselves as the law enforcers who have actually no regard to the rule of law. It is outright harassment against Echanis’ family and our group, whose quest for justice has been met with another injustice,” Fernando Hicap, former Anakpawis Party-list Congressman in the 16th congress said in a statement.
Hicap, who also heads the national fishers group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (PAMALAKAYA), slated the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) for continuous detention of Colabres, and holding the remains of Echanis.
“The NCRPO has no right or authority to detain Colabres and hold the remains of Echanis. They should be released immediately,” Hicap said.
Hicap also raised fear that Colabres might contact the corona virus disease (COVID-19) when he was placed inside a jail with more than 30 inmates last night, as there were reports that inmates in several jails are COVID19 positive.
“Colabres’ health safety has been put into risk when the police detained him into a congested prison cell,” ended Hicap. ###
