Oppose immoral US arms sale to Ph – Anakpawis
Manila, Philippines – Days after the announcement by the United States of the approval of a possible foreign military sale to the Philippine government, the Anakpawis Party-list slammed it as immoral and urged the people to oppose it. The sale amounting to an estimated $1.5 billion involves six attack helicopters and related equipment.
“Public funds at around P76 billion just for six helicopters, while many poor families are crying for immediate aid, as the lockdown threw them into bankruptcy and indebtedness, is the height of immorality,” Ariel “Ka Ayik” Casilao, Anakpawis Party-list former representative said in a press statement.
He said that while the P275-billion emergency fund for the pandemic response is yet to be accounted for, amid failure to flatten the curve, the Duterte government is again considering throwing away hard-earned money of the people into useless endeavors.
“Any available funds should be used to end the pandemic and as aid to vulnerable sectors, such as the peasants and workers. The country which is victimized by the government’s abandonment of food self-sufficiency could anytime be plagued by worsened hunger. Funds should be allotted instead for production subsidy, not for weapons of mass destruction,” he slated.
He also rejected the basis for the said deal, as being part of modernizing the military or country’s defense capability.
“Any upgrade to the military under Duterte is useless, with surrender as policy to China. The military has even killed more Filiipinos, than the number of times of sincerely defending our national territory in the West Philippine Sea. Modernizing the military simply means modernizing the human rights abuses and it never will contribute to defending national sovereignty, as long as those in power are lackeys of foreign superpowers,” he ended. ###
