Anakpawis urges poor communities to join “Black Friday Protest” for press freedom
Manila, Philippines – As the Movement Against Tyranny (MAT) called for the “Black Friday Protest” for press freedom, the Anakpawis Party-list urged communities of workers, urban poor, peasant and other rural-based sectors to join as mass action to defend the right to free and independent press and freedom of expression, amid systematic attacks of the Duterte regime to democracy and human rights in the country. MAT called on the public to hold candle-lighting protests simultaneously at 6:30pm this evening and post it on social media.
“The shutting down of ABS-CBN is a legitimate concern of all freedom-loving Filipinos and our right to free press is non-negotiable, especially amid the tyrannical measures of the Duterte regime. We urge the people to resist the Duterte regime’s attack on press freedom,” Ariel “Ka Ayik” Casilao said in a press statement.
Moreover, he warned against stepped up mass deception campaigns by the government, as countermeasures to the overwhelming public outcry against the shutdown.
“We are witnessing systematic approaches on social media and even mainstream news outfits to vilify ABS-CBN, to undermine its public support, but is clearly failing as shown by the panic of government institutions involved who are now passing the blame and washing their hands of accountability. These are signs that they are feeling the heat ‘people power,’” the former lawmaker noted.
Finally, he stressed that the fight for press freedom is a fight for the next generation of Filipinos to enjoy the freedoms won by blood and sacrifices and people power against the Marcos dictatorship, and that it is clear that the present regime is mimicking its anti-democratic measures. ###
