Anakpawis urges the Duterte government to resume peace talks with the NDFP
Manila, Philippines – Members of the Anakpawis Party-list joined the protest action in front of the Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City demanding President Rodrigo Duterte the resumption of the peace talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) and breakout from the peace spoiling of rightists in his cabinet.
“Pursuing peace is always beneficial to Duterte, while its opposite, the mass and systematic human rights abuses against peasants and activists across the country, only fills up his dossier of being a criminal against humanity,” former Anakpawis Party-list lawmaker Ariel “Ka Ayik” Casilao said in a press statement.
He should reflect that his fascist issuances such as the Executive Order 70 or the formation of the National Task Force to End the Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF ELCAC) and the “whole-of-nation” approach to counter-insurgency; and the Memorandum Order No. 32 or the order to attack peasants and activisits in Negros, Samar and Bicol established his criminal against humanity record and an enemy of just and lasting peace in the country.
“We have been saying all these past years, that the armed conflict is rooted on the fundamental problem of landlessness, oppression and injustice. The president himself knows this, thus, his continued ploy to offer members of the New People’s Army better lives by giving them lands and livelihood. As if it would resolve contradiction,” he explained.
The former lawmaker who pushed for the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill (GARB) during the 17th congress, espousing free distribution of land to poor farmers said that finalizing the draft Comprehensive Agreement on Socio-Economic Reforms (CASER) will generate a significant development in the countryside and uplift the rural-based sectors.
“The on-going armed conflict in the country is a struggle for the old and new system. The status quo is dominated by hacienderos and compradors, while the NDFP is pushing fundamental reforms in political and economic structure for the benefit of the oppressed and exploited people,” he said.
Finally, he urged the Duterte government to create the conducive atmosphere for the resumption by releasing political prisoners, especially the elderly, sick and women. ###
